These Old Cosmopolitan Issues Are REALLY… Something

When I was looking up CosmoGirl the other day, I stumbled on a bunch of old Cosmopolitan covers from the 1970s and 80s, and they are…. whoa. There is a lot less SEX SEX SEX than there is now, in favor of plain-spoken and wordy cover lines that have aged about as well as the models’ coifs. For a magazine that wanted to be for the liberated woman, there is an almost Victorian snooty curiosity to them, and what felt progressive then is achingly regressive now. It’s anthropologically fascinating, if also a little uncomfortable.
