Ahhh the air dry. A necessary evil for many women who want to reduce the amount of heat on their strands. The only downfall? The frizzy mane that follows and needs to be tamed by, you guessed it, heat.

More and more, we’re seeing the trend towards natural texture–be it straight, wavy, curls or kinks. But those not born with a perfect twist out or beach girl waves know that it takes practice, technique, and the right products to master the air dry. So, we tapped Mane Master Laurent Philippon, who created the quintessential air dry hair look with Bumble and bumble for Mansur Gavriel at NYFW, to teach us what products every hair type should be using to get the perfect air dry.
No matter what your hair type is, you’re going to start off the same way. Towel dry your hair after you get out of the shower with a microfiber towel. Then, untangle the hair with a bristle brush and follow with the right product for your hair type.
Laurent tells us the most important thing to remember is NOT to touch your hair until it’s fully dry.
For Straight or Flat Hair
Use Bumble and bumble surf spray mixed with Bumble and bumble prep primer. The sea salt spray adds volume, texture and hold, making it look less straight and flat while the prep primer keeps the looks refreshed and detangled.
For Frizzier Hair
With frizzy hair, you need to first evaluate whether your hair is fine or thick. Start off using Bumble and Bumble prep as a base. If the hair is damaged, use Bumble and bumble prep or Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil primer as a base instead to add moisture to your strands.
Once the hair is prepped, use Bumble and bumble Don’t Blow It for fine or thick hair. Don’t Blow It is the first-of-its kind– it’s a creme that enhances texture and body for an air-dried look with a product-free feel.
Expert tip: As you work in the Don’t Blow It product, squeeze and twist your hair to enhance your natural texture.
For Curly Hair
Use Bumble and bumble curl primer as a base. This product works on all curl patterns and helps define and detangle your hair. Then, shape each curl around the tail of a comb (or around one finger if curl is bigger ) using a bit of Bumble and bumble defining cream. This product creates flexible curls with separation for a product-free feel and look.
