Our audience misses their stylists, derms, and manicurists as much as we do. Here, we bring experts straight to the Allure reader’s home for lessons on handling at-home beauty like a pro. Introducing, House Calls.
Hello, and welcome to House Calls: Ask Me Anything, a brand-new Allure series in which dermatologists answer all of your burning questions about skin care from the comfort of their homes. Want to get involved? Simply tune in to our Instagram Stories every Saturday, as each expert will be responding to questions there. Then we’ll be featuring some of the major highlights here. For the first installment, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Entiére Dermatology, Melissa K. Levin, dropped knowledge about acne, rosacea, and more — along with a few of her favorite products.
When it comes to treating acne, Levin is all about retinoids, and as it turns out, one of her must-haves comes from the drugstore. “I love Differin Gel because even though it’s over-the-counter, it’s actually a prescription-strength retinoid and retinoids are really the backbone of how we treat acne because they normalize skin cell turnover, help with skin discoloration, and help prevent acne in the first place,” she explains. Additionally, she says it’s a great option because it’s anti-inflammatory and photostable, meaning it won’t be inactivated by the sun.
Speaking of the sun, Levin says it’s actually the main trigger for rosacea. “There are many triggers for rosacea but the number one, and the most common trigger, is the sun,” she says. “That’s why one of my favorite products is probably Elta MD’s UV Clear Sunscreen. It’s a gentle physical SPF with niacinamide.” Levin isn’t the only one who loves it — Allure awarded the sunscreen a Best of Beauty win in 2018, and senior beauty editor Dianna Mazzone penned an entire love letter to the product, so you know it’s legit.
